Do we refuse and resist or do we let go? This developing body of work visualizes the emotional topography of Black women living in the Bay Area through landscapes and biomythographies. The subjects- a Black lesbian elder, an Oakland native Black mother and a Nigerian Immigrant- all Bay Area based artists,  are represented as both everyday people and fantastic afro-surrealist portraits of Calafia- the Mythical Black queen and namesake of California. Archival video of San Francisco in 1903, recent footage of the aftermath of of the Dixie Fire, Lassen volcanic activity,  All Out for Gaza protest on Oct 14 2023  and kaleidoscopic field guides of Bay Area native plants are embedded throughout the films and photos- overlaying California’s ongoing climate catastrophe, colonial history and resistance movements shared between the land and the people living here. This work questions ideas of balance and empathy between human and non-human life.
