Movement for the Time Being(s)
Movement for the Time Being(s) in an interactive sound and video installation that explores the connection between time, music, landscape and lingering.
So much misery- anxiety, numbness, regret, boredom- is derived from being at odds against Time. I am interested in music’s ability to change the quality of our attention so that we may experience relief and fulfillment from the passing of time.
Lingering, like a sampled loop from a record, extends and amplifies sensation, creating new contexts and ways of relating. Lingering sculpts the space for dilated feeling, thinking and being.
There’s a connection between lingering, porch swings and lullabies. Rudimentary lo-fi melodies paired with rocking gestures are some of our first reconciliations with temporal discomfort. Scientists have observed a phenomena known as Brainwave Entrainment which details how our brain waves synchronize to the rhythms of external periodic stimuli- be it music, bird songs, cradling or the movement of a swing.
This soundscape incorporates real time data of the swing’s acceleration to modulate various effects on sonic textures that include field recordings from Cataract Falls trail in Marin County and a vinyl sample of Juanita Rogers’ ballad “I'm So Glad you Love Me” on Sun Ra’s album “The Second Stop is Jupiter.”
